Recently, the super-rich and super powerful gathered for the annual economic summit in Davos, Switzerland.  There, they received a report from Oxfam.  It said the 26 richest people in the world own as much wealth as half the human race. (“Davos: Skiing past a world in crisis,” The Week, Feb. 2, 2019, pg. 34.) Its conclusion screamed of a global economic imbalance and explained why capitalism is losing its luster in many societies, including ours.

But how are we to address economic inequality? As writer Michael Hirsch points out, it’s difficult to rectify an imbalance when the people with power and money are the problem.

“Tax the rich,” has a pleasing, moral ring.  We hear it often from left leaning politicians, their fingers pointed toward the sky as if to evoke some higher power — men and women reeking a righteous intent more suited for the pulpit than a political podium. Nonetheless, there is truth to what they say.  But, not the whole truth, as Venezuelans — once citizens of a rich nation, and now among the poorest — have come to learn.

Howard Schultz, former Starbuck’s chief, distrusts both extremes of the political spectrum and is considering a run for the presidency as an independent  centrist.  His announcement has stunned the Democratic party.  Believing their time has come, they fear Schultz will split off enough voters to allow Republican Donald Trump a second term as U. S. President. As a result, the liberal establishment has come out swinging with a vitriol against Schultz that is usually reserved for our President.

What is his crime?  Are we to shun Schultz for having created a prosperous, global  company, for being a leader generous to his employees, a person generous to charitable causes and sensitive to the environment?

Frankly, my plan is to give the man a fair hearing.  The Democrats, I hope, will respond with a cogent platform of their own.  Using Donald Trump as a boogie man shouldn’t work.  We’re grownups here.

Howard Schultz may be a rich white man but his notion of inclusion appeals to me.  What’s more, he seems to have lived by his principles.  Those who point fingers and foment anger should know by now  few minds are changed with insults.

My problem with Howard Schultz is that he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, and that he also opposes universal health care. He doesn't seem to see that the big trillion dollar tax cut he and his billionaire cronies got is an entitlement as well. He complains about Democrats moving too far to the left because they support universal health care for all. People are moving farther to the left because the rich in this country have skewed the playing field to their own advantage for too long. Name one positive thing this administration has done for the people of this country since Trump became president. Nothing! Except the prison reform might help a few of their own when they end up going to jail for their many crimes against the American people. I don't think we need any more billionaires running for president, especially given our experience with our current sociopath-in-chief.

Signe, Here is what I know about Schutlz’ s view on health care and it comes from a magazine critical of his candidacy: He favors reworking the Affordable Care Act and wants corporations to have more “skin in the game.” He does not think the current proposals for universal health care is affordable and to be honest, neither does Bernie Sanders. https://www.gq.com/story/howard-schultz-health-care. For a long but complete analysis of the pros and cons of universal health care as it is proposed in this country and how it works is other countries, I refer you to this site: https://www.formosapost.com/pros-and-cons-of-universal-health-care/ As for excluding Schultz from consideration because you distrust of our current president, that may be a gut response you might want to reconsider. Not all wealthy people are to be mistrusted any more than we should harbor mistrust for the poor who are “caravanning” toward our border. Needless to say, our founding fathers were white, wealthy men. What I’m suggesting is that free minds should give Schultz a fair hearing and avoid being manipulated by the fears of the Democratic Party.

What I "don't get" about THE VOCAL US Citizen/Billionaire is why they appose universal health care, here in Australia we have had a Federal universal health cover since 72! albeit we have a 25 ml population. Why is it so emotional issue for US Citz that you have your employer pay for or as we Australians are levied 2.5% of gross income ( Not tax paying pensioners) and so all have access to the best medical the country can provide as well our pensioner cohort has a $6.5 AUD for every prescription ( if your on a pension or low income) , I don't believe a universal schem/ formula would be any different whether its 8M L+ taxpayers or 100Ml+ My guess is the employer would claim their payments of health cover as tax deduction so in both cases the government payments are involved. My guess is capitalism is so ingrained that socialism (what ever that means) is despised, yet you have 30ML living in extreme poverty with no access to unemployment payments or access to good health care .

As the saying goes, Peter, all politics is local. The U. S. has a long history of opposing socialized anything, though that may be changing. I had very good health care while in England in the 1960s, so agree with universal healthcare. But laying the blame at the feet of billionaires isn't correct. Until recently, the average citizen opposed it, too. The Clinton's impaled themselves on the issue and Obama only managed to increase coverage to some of the people some of the time while he had a Democratic House and Senate. I battled this issue on a local level and do feel I have some bonafides on this subject. Rather than go into details here, please read my upcoming blog on the subject, which outlines my experience. It will appear on Wednesday, February 20. If we ever get universal coverage, people will love it. But they fought hard against even the modest Obama plan. Now that they have it, as broken as it is thanks to Republican efforts, they cherish that coverage. I have friends whose lives were save because they had it.
