Curious About Indonesia For A Start

Who reads this blog? This May will begin “Write Away’s” twelfth year, so I’m curious about its audience.  Some subscribers have been with me almost the full time.  The site has never gone viral but its readers seem to be loyal. Few have unsubscribed while visitor numbers grow.  On occasion, an individual leaves a comment, but largely, the audience is silent. When I stopped writing a daily blog two years ago, no one seemed to notice, though one person did offer the pieces had grown longer.

Lately, I’ve been considering reducing the blogs to one a week.  I’d like to make time to write some short stories. But I enjoy creating blogs so I’m torn. I wonder if anyone would notice if I made the change?

Examining the Google graphics about those who find my site, I know most aren’t subscribers.  I’m not sure what wind blows them to my island. Facebook isn’t a significant source nor any of my other platforms. They come to me from far-reaching places.

The majority are from Indonesia. They’ve been with me for a while, so I know it isn’t Google’s error. What attracts them to the thoughts of a woman they’ve never met, I wonder? Readers from the  United States are my second largest demographic.  China’s numbers have grown a bit. The Russians have abandoned me., and I’m grateful to be rid of their mischief.

After so many years of blog writing, I realize I have been negligent not to wonder about my guests. I’d like to know more now.  How do I go about it?  I hate surveys and never answer those sent to me. Would an open invitation asking them to tell me something about themselves work? If so, consider this to be that invitation.  What brings you here, readers?

Like a note in a bottle, I cast this request into the web’s sea.  Will I hear from anyone?  Or will my answer be the thrum of silence?

In the year of 1968, you taught me to love Hamlet. I even memorized some of the speeches. I do regret I didn't learn the rules of spelling and english, however.

Never mind about the rules. They are always changing. I hardly know them myself anymore. :)

I’m not the silent type. So here is one reader’s response. I love your writing, and your thought process. Whether or not I agree with your conclusions, the way you gather information, synthesize it through decades of lived experience, and offer points of view in addition to your own keeps me engaged. How fascinating that a majority of your readers come from Indonesia. As you know, I’m from Jakarta but the US has been my home for 60 years. Your blend of creativity , curiosity, and intellectual acumen draws me to your blog. It’s my morning brain yoga. I have the same relationship to blogs as you have to surveys. But I read two religiously, yours and my friend Cai’s.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I shall live on them for months. As for the Indonesian connection, maybe you have more friends there than you realize and I have been the beneficiary?

Of course, you must continue writing. But giving yourself the room for fiction is essential. This is the heart of your craft. Those discerning individuals accross the world who take an interest celebrate your voice.

I agree fiction stimulates the little grey cells, an underappreciated truth. Lovely to have your thoughts on the matter.

I wonder what form love letters take these days, do people even any longer write them? They certainly are proof that a captive audience of one is all that matters... Of course, in literature we have the famous teardrop letter in “Madame Bovary,“ a reminder that every effort to communicate should be challenged just as a routine matter... I'm not sure how any of this relates to your question, Who reads my blog?, other than as anecdotal evidence that I am real and I am a reader of your blog, mainly because I want to see how you are thinking, but also because I know I can express my own opinion freely, and that is a degree of freedom we aren't often granted in every day life...

Always happy to provide a platform for people's thoughts. Thank you for sharing yours.

You challenged me in your Writing for College class (1973) and many of your blogs challenge me now.

Thank you for those kind words. Now, is it possible you have friends in Indonesia? :)

I appreciated your teaching in 67/68 and my continued learning opportunities through this blog, Just Read It, and recently purchased, Trompe l'Oeil. I enjoy relating the essential musical elements of melody, harmony and rhythm to effective communication styles which motivate me to stretch. Thank you!

Such kind words from a gifted artist. Thank you. Hope you enjoy Trompe l'Oeil. It's the most philosophical of my works. Knowing you, I think you will.

Thank you, Maggi. These, when I read the news, I suspect I'm losing it. :)

I have no fear you will ever stop writing--there are still too many wonderful new words out there waiting to be found, thoughts to be shared in a way that all can understand and metaphors to be conjured about almost anything. I do fear, however, that if you write just one blog a week I will spend much of my month never knowing again what day of the week it is. On the other hand, I really do enjoy your short stories!! :) Thanks as always for all you do for so many...

Wonderful words of encouragement. So far, I'm keeping up with the two blogs. The schedule keeps me on my toes and with appreciative readers like you, how dare disappoint! Thank you.
