Another poll last week measured the public’s response to Donald Trump’s policies. While his approval numbers have declined, about thirty percent of voters remain steadfast. I don’t know why. The list of Trump’s criminal indictments is long, as is the number of civil lawsuits he’s lost. Impeached twice in his first term, since his re-election, he has more than once been accused of violating the Constitution. That he exploits the Presidency for personal gain is obvious to many. And, most recently, he has attempted to threaten free speech.
The President’s ties to people of questionable character should also raise public concern. A friend of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein for many years, he confessed he knew the man’s liking for young women. Even so, he kept his silence. Today, he welcomes felons into his administration and has disgraced himself as a consummate liar. One wonders if Trump has neglected any of the 7 deadly sins.
Those who rise to his defense with the argument that other Presidents have been corrupt are kidding themselves. Criminality isn’t excused because someone else has broken the law.
A student of philosophy, I’ve long considered the degree of tolerance I owe to Trump’s unwavering supporters. Very little, I’ve decided. Nor am I obliged to keep a fragile peace between us by meeting them “halfway.” Halfway to what? Criminality? Venality? Cruelty? Dogma that rises from a dung heap smells of the dung heap. Others who cherish reason and common sense will, I hope, arrive at the same conclusion.
