In my freshman year in college, I discovered The Communist Manifesto was on my reading list.  After years of hearing the book was pure evil, I gasped.  A few pages into the material, however, and  I learned what I’d been told was nonsense. What’s wrong comaraderie?  Coca-Cola

Thoughts On Christmas Passed

Dec 26, 2018

A few days before Christmas, I sat down to lunch with a friend of many years who is religious.  He’s aware I’m an atheist, but that gives piquancy to our conversations.   As we were sitting amidst holiday decorations, he seemed unable to refrain from saying, “I don’t know h

A Christmas Story

Dec 24, 2018

Every holiday, I shop for children’s toys. I have no off-spring and, therefore, no grandchildren. I shop because my mother started the tradition years ago and she expects me to continue it. So, the day after Thanksgiving I found myself browsing through a local store, wandering past

The week of George Herbert Bush’s funeral showed us an America divided.  Republicans, the party of disgruntled whites, lionized the deceased president in an effort to reclaim the moral high ground.  Democrats spent their time pointing to the gaping disparity between the conduct of

A friend emailed me a question the other day.  ” Caroline, can you suggest any artists you think I would enjoy?  I’ve cleared a few walls and even though it’s not a financially good time for new, original art, I think prints can sometimes be found at quite reasonable p

My Blog Picture Is Old, Not Me

Dec 17, 2018

“You look better in person than you do in your blog picture,” said a former high school student of mine from 40 years ago.  He was in town for a class reunion and looked me up.  His remark I took to be gracious rather than true.  The blog  picture is me at 72.  At 82, I’ve
