No one likes paying taxes, least of all billionaires.  They’d rather buy yachts.  Obliged to keep up appearances, they give to charity, some less than others, Elon Musk being the stingiest.  Nonetheless, they are lavish in their political contributions to politicians who favor th

The Fools In Town…

I’m delighted to see the energy, money, and number of volunteers behind Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. I’m also excited that the country may soon have its first female President.  Nonetheless, I continue to despair that ageism felled Joe Biden’s bid for a second term, and

“Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.”  When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote those lines in his novel, The Great Gatsby, he may not have been striving for poetry, but he exposed the truth–which is what great art does. Lauren Larson isn’t an a

One of the pluses of being old is that I’ve lived much of my life without the internet.  That means I don’t fear having my youthful opinions thrown in my face years later.  For that reason, I pity  J. D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 Presidential election. Th

Albert Einstein may not have said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” but the thought is genius.  An example would be acts of war. Homo sapiens have used violence to settle their disputes for centuries,  even engaged in a war to end

The bank paid off one of my certificates of deposit (CD) early to refinance at a lower rate. My broker suggested one of two things: 1) buy a 3-month Treasury that paid 5% interest, or 2)  a one-year Note that paid 4.5%.  I chose the longer Treasury despite the lower rate.  If the F

Felled by ageism, Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 campaign for U. S. President, and the country lost one of its greatest leaders. A gracious man, he put the nation above his ambition and ended Democratic anxiety about his ability to defeat Donald Trump.  On the upside, his decision

A woman emailed to say that knowing I am in my late 80s, she admired my energy.  Admittedly, I like to keep busy, but I don’t always excel at what I do. I’m bad with computers.  I find them either unreliable or inscrutable, which is my way of saying  I’m slow to learn their w
